Since choosing a new laptop charger can sometimes be a complicated task with many unknowns, we've started preparing articles to help you find the charger you need based on the brand of your laptop.

We recently published a text about Dell laptop chargers, and here we will tell more about the specifics at Acer.

The reasons why you may need to replace your charger or buy an extra one are varied - your old charger isn't working, you forgot it somewhere, or you just need a spare/extra one.

While choosing a new charger may seem easy at first, there are some "subtleties" you need to pay attention to.

Why is it important to choose the right charger for our Acer laptop?

The charger you choose should be compatible with the make and model of your laptop. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to get an Acer-branded charger. Major adapter companies such as LITEON, DELTA and AcBel offer extremely high quality chargers. You may even get a charger made by one of these companies when you buy a laptop.

Besides the compatibility between the charger and the laptop, you need to know a few more things:

What are the features of Acer chargers?

While all the big companies are racing to brand their products, with Acer things don't look exactly the same. The company often doesn't brand its batteries and chargers, but leaves either just the product number or the manufacturer's logo on top.

Also, the label doesn't always list the wattage, which makes things seem a little more confusing, but that's okay, if you have a problem, we'll help.

What data do we need when buying a charger?

Input and output voltage

The input voltage is the current your charger draws from the mains. Different countries use specific standards for electricity - usually between 110V - 240V. You can see the values on the label of the adapter. Most often they are between 100V - 240V. This illustrates that your charger can charge almost anywhere.

The output voltage represents the current your laptop is running at. This is the most important value to know when looking for a new charger. It is displayed just below the input voltage in volts (for example 19V).

In case you choose an adapter with a lower value, the laptop battery will most likely not start charging or will charge very slowly. In some cases, the laptop will not start at all. If you choose an adapter with a higher output voltage, most often the laptop will not start, and in some isolated cases, it may cause a failure.

Type of plug

There are several types of jacks - standard jacks with two outlets and jacks with a third outlet. Acer use standard two-outlet jacks.

It is important that the charger socket matches exactly, otherwise you may damage the socket or break the socket itself.

The dimensions are determined by the outer and inner diameter of the jack.

Types of Acer Laptops Buckets:

  • Outer diameter - 3.0mm
  • Internal diameter 1.0mm

  • Outer diameter - 5.5mm
  • Internal diameter - 1.7mm

  • Outer diameter - 5.5mm
  • Internal diameter - 2.5mm

  • Outer diameter - 7.4mm
  • Internal diameter - 5.0mm

Power

The power is also listed on the charger label (as we've already found out with Acer, not always), usually listed on its own. It is measured in watts (W) and can vary. A 90W power supply, for example, can provide power from zero to 90W. If your charger is 65W, your new adapter should also be 65W minimum, but even if you get 90W or 120W you won't have a washout.

Where to buy a new charger?

If you need to replace your adapter, you will most likely look for more information on the internet.

Whether you choose an online store or a physical one, if you compare the features listed above, you will have no difficulty in making your choice. Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages in both cases.

Online shop for chargers

The advantages with good online stores are that they offer a large selection of laptop chargers, the ability to easily filter and compare models, fast shipping with a test and review option, and right of return.

The disadvantages are that you may come across unscrupulous traders online. To avoid this - always pay attention to where you are buying from, whether the website lists a company name, address and contact phone number. Also, pay attention to which country the goods will be shipped from. Sometimes this information is well disguised and delivery takes months.

If you have any questions or hesitations, you can always contact us for a consultation at office@batteryland.com - send us a picture of the label of your old adapter, and if it is not available, you can take a picture of the sticker on the back of the laptop or just write its model.

Dedicated physical store

In physical stores you can also get advice, test the different adapters and choose the right one for you. They are generally a good option if you need to get an adapter very urgently. Our advice is to call in advance to confirm that the charger you are looking for is in stock.

What are the most common problems and how to make sure that the laptop charger does not work?

1.The charger is plugged in, but the laptop doesn't work. Most common reasons:

  1. Defective adapter
  2. Broken cable
  3. Another non-power problem
  4. Improper adapter (you took your colleague's charger in speed)

Usually, when the problem is with the charger or the cable, none of the lights on the laptop are lit.

2. The charger is plugged in and the laptop works but does not charge the computer battery. Most common reasons:

  1. Problem with the battery
  2. Interrupted third pin of the charger socket
  3. Improper adapter (you took your colleague's charger in speed)

To make sure the problem is with the charger or the battery, it's easiest to test with another charger or test the battery on another laptop.

3. The charger works and charges the battery, but makes a loud buzzing sound.

You can continue to use the charger, but be more careful. Do not leave it on when you are not around the computer. A sign that there is a higher chance that you will soon have to buy a new one.

4. The charger works and charges the battery, but it heats up too much.

It is normal for the adapters to heat up during prolonged operation. It is difficult to determine when the heating is within normal limits, but certainly, if you can not keep your hand on the surface of the adapter when touching, it is good to contact a service center or directly consider replacing it with a new one.

5. The laptop turns off when moving / moving

Most often the reason for this is in a broken / damaged socket on the laptop itself

6. The laptop turns off for no apparent reason when running on charger

The most common cause of this problem is a broken / damaged socket on the computer itself
